Unbelievable Snow Ice Cream

4 qt. clean snow
4 eggs 1 c. Half N' Half
1 c. whole cream
1 c. sugar
1 vanilla bean, slit down middle and scrape seeds out retaining hull for other use
1 tsp. nutmeg

Beat eggs and Half n' Half together. Add sugar while continuing to beat. When sugar is dissolved add whole cream, vanilla seeds and nutmeg. Pour over snow and fold until blended. Serves about 6.

Place on table and see the snow glisten like diamonds. Ice cream made with snow many years ago when the Roman Emperor Nero Claudius Caesar wanted a cold dessert on a hot afternoon, he sent runners into the mountains for snow. It was brought back and flavored with fruit juices and honey. The result was the forerunner of our fruit ices and sherbets. Later eggnog was poured over the snow and a cold dish similar to our ice cream was enjoyed.
