Brown Soda Bread

2 cups self-rising wholewheat flour
2 cups self-rising a/p unbleached flour
1 tsp. soda
2-3 cups buttermilk

Preheat oven to 375 degrees

Grease a baking sheet with melted butter.

Sift flours and soda into a large bowl.

Use enough buttermilk to moisten the ingredients and form a soft dough.

Turn dough onto a floured work surface and kneed lightly until smooth. Shape into an 8 inch round.

Put on the baking sheet. With a sharp knife cut a deep cross (like an X) in the top.

Brush with water then sprinkle with a little flour.

Bake for 20 to 30 mins, or until bread sounds hollow when tapped with the fingers.
