Greek Bread

1 c. hot milk
1/4 c. vegetable shortening
1 tsp. salt
2 Tbsp. sugar
1 envelope yeast
1/4 c. warm water
4 c. sifted flour
melted butter

Heat milk and stir in shortening, salt and sugar. Soften yeast in warm water.

Sift flour into bowl. Make a well in the flour and pour the softened yeast into the well. Gradually stir in warm milk mixture to make a firm dough. Knead dough until smooth.

Put dough into a greased bowl and let rise for 1 1/2 hours in a warm place.

Knead and form into 2 loaves. Place loaves in greased, floured bread pans. Brush tops with melted butter and let rise in warm place for about 1 hour, or until double in bulk.

Bake in 375 degrees oven for about 45 minutes, or until loaves are golden in color.
