Oatmeal Scones

Makes 8 servings
1 3/4 cup all purpose flour
1/3 cup sugar
1 1/2 teaspoons baking powder
3/4 teaspoon baking soda
1/2 teaspoon salt
1 teaspoon grated orange peel (1 large orange)
1/2 cup (1 stick) unsalted butter chilled, cut in pieces
1 1/3 cup quick cooking rolled oats
1/2 cup raisins
1 cup buttermilk
Topping: 1 egg beaten
1 tablespoon sugar

Heat oven to 375 degrees F.

In food processor bowl with metal blade, combine flour, sugar, baking powder, baking soda, salt and grated orange peel; process til well blended.

Add butter; process til mixture resembles coarse meal.

Transfer to large bowl; stir in oats, raisins and buttermilk just til sticky dough forms. Lightly butter large cookie sheet.

On lightly floured surface with floured hands, knead dough 10 times. Gather dough into 8 handfuls and place on buttered cookie sheet; flatten each slightly.

Brush with beaten egg; sprinkle with sugar.

Bake for 20 to 25 minutes or til golden brown.
