Hot Cross Buns

7 oz. milk
2 Tbl. butter
1 egg
1/4 cup sugar
1 tsp. salt
1 tsp. lemon or orange peel
3 cups all-purpose flour
1 1/2 tsp. rapid or quick yeast

1/2 cup dried fruits of choice

Glaze:
1/2 cup confectioners' sugar
1-2 Tbl. milk
1/2 tsp. vanilla, almond, or orange extract


Add ingredients to pan of bread machine in order listed except fruit. Mix all ingredients together in a small bowl. Adjust consistency with milk as desired.

Add fruit to the machine pan after dough ball has been formed, about 5 or 8 minutes into the kneading phase.

Remove dough from machine upon completion of the dough cycle.

Divide dough into 12 equal pieces, shape into small balls and place in lightly greased muffin cups. Cover and let rise for about 1 hour in a warm, draft-free location.

Just before baking, score a cross into the top of each bun with a sharp knife. Bake in preheated oven at 350 degrees for 15-20 minutes. While buns are still warm, drizzle glaze into the cross on top of each bun.
