CRAZY DEVILS FOOD CAKE
1 1/2 cup all-purpose flour
1 cup sugar
1 tsp. soda
1/2 tsp salt
3 Tbls. cocoa
Sift together the above dry ingredients.
add the following liquids:
1 tsp vanilla
1 Tbls. vinegar
5 Tbls. vegetable oil (Wesson, Crisco or ?)
1 cup cold water
Mix and bake in 350 degree oven for 30 minutes.
When the recipe first came out the instructions were to put the dry ingredients in a 9 x 9 cake pan, stir with a fork
or whisk. With a spoon make 3 indentations in flour mixture. Put oil in one, vinegar in another and the vanilla in the
third. Pour one cup cold water over all and mix thoroughly.
I've found that when I followed those instructions my fork or whisk did not reach into the corners of the pan, and
my cakes ended up with white flour(y) edges and corners. So now, I dirty a mixing bowl and put in the dry ingredients first, add the liquids and beat with electric mixer and pour the completed batter into a cake pan. I get better results on the finished product. This cake is a dark, rich and moist cake especially good with a scoop of vanilla or peppermint ice cream.
