Cherry Crumble Coffee Cake

Crumble
1/4 cup firmly packed brown sugar
2 tablespoons flour
1/4 teaspoon salt
1/8 teaspoon ground cinnamon
1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg
2 tablespoons unsalted butter
1/4 cup finely chopped almonds
1/4 cup old-fashioned oats

Cake
1 1/2 cups flour
1/2 cup sugar
1/2 teaspoon salt
1/2 teaspoon baking powder
1/4 teaspoon baking soda
1/4 cup unsalted butter
1 egg -- lightly beaten
3/4 cup buttermilk
1 teaspoon vanilla
1 cup fresh or frozen cherries -- pitted and chopped

Preheat oven to 350 degrees. To make crumble: In a small bowl, stir together first 5 ingred. Add butter; using a pastry blender, mix well. Add almonds and oats, mix well; set aside.

To make the cake: In a large bowl, sift together first 5 ingred. Add butter; using a pastry blender, mix until ingred. resemble coarse crumbs. In a small bowl, lightly beat egg, buttermilk and vanilla. Add to dry ingred.; fold until smooth.

Pour batter into buttered rectangular baking dish. Scatter cherries over the top; sprinkle with crumble. Bake until cake has risen and turned golden, about 50 min. Remove from oven and let cool for 25 min. Serve warm.
