Fresh Apple Kuchen

1/4 cup very warm water
1 package active dry yeast
1 stick butter or margarine
2-3/4 cups all-purpose flour, sifted
1/2 cup sugar
1/2 teaspoon salt
3 eggs

Apple Topping:
2 cups fresh apple slices
6 tablespoons butter or margarine
2 tablespoons ground cinnamon
2/3 cup sugar
1/2 cup flour

Preheat oven to 375°F.

Measure the very warm water into a small bowl. Sprinkle in yeast; stir until dissolved.

Cream butter or margarine thoroughly in large electric mixer bowl. Gradually add the sugar and salt; cream together. Add the dissolved yeast, eggs and milk; beat at medium speed until well blended. Gradually add and blend in the flour while beating at medium speed; beat until mixture is well blended.

Spread the dough in a well-greased square pan, 9x9x2-inches. Arrange Apple Topping on top.
Cover; let rise in a warm place, free from draft, until doubled in bulk, about 1 hour. Bake at 375° F. for about 40 minutes. Serve warm.

Makes 1 (9-inch) kuchen

Apple Topping: Arrange the apple slices on top of batter. Mix together remaining ingredients and sprinkle over the apples.

Note: This is more a batter-type yeast dough and you can vary the fruit (plums, peaches, apricots, pears, etc. ) to suit your tastes.
