Traditional Dump Cake

1 can crushed pinneapple
1 can pie filling - traditionally cherry
1 box yellow or white cake mix
1/2 Cup chopped nuts - Optional
1 stick butter

In a 9 X 13-inch pan "dump" pinneapple with liquid and pie filling into dish. Mix together. Sprinkle yellow cake mix evenly on top and sprinkle with nuts. Dot with butter. (I use a frozen stick of butter and shred it over the cake mix using my salad shooter. I find it coats the cake mix more evenly.) Bake at 350 for 45 minutes. My mother always served it warm with hard sauce, but I don't have her recipe any more.

Variations:

Black Forrest Dump Cake: Follow above recipe. Use a box of Chocolate cake mix instead of yellow. Use cherry pie filling.

Pumpkin Spice: Use 1 can pumpkin, 1 can evaporated milk, and 2-3 tsp. pumkin pie spice. Mix this together in bottom of 9 X 13 dish (omit pineapple if desired.) Use a spice cake on top.

Rhubarb: I usually make stewed rhubarb, sometimes adding strawberries too. Use this instead of pie filling in the traditional recipe.
