Chocolate Praline Torte

1 1/2 c chopped walnuts or pecans
1 1/2 c vanilla wafer crumbs
1 c firmly packed brown sugar
1 c melted butter
1 tsp vanilla
1 (18.5 oz.) box devil's food cake mix
1 1/2 c whipped cream or Cool Whip
3 Tbsp sifted powdered sugar


Combine the pecans, vanilla wafer crumbs, brown sugar and margarine. Sprinkle about 3/4 cup nut/crumb mixture in 4 ungreased 9-inch round cake pans and press lightly.
Prepare cake mix according to package directions; divide equally between pans. Bake at 350 degrees for 15 to 20 minutes or until a toothpick tests clean. Remove from pans immediately; allow to cool completely.

Beat whipped cream until fluffy. Gradually add sugar, beating until stiff peaks form. Stir in vanilla.

Place one layer, nut side up on serving plate. Spread 3/4 cup whipped cream over layer. Repeat process ending with nut side on top. Chill.
