DATE NUT CANDY
2 cups granulated sugar
1 cup brown sugar, packed
1 cup milk
1/4 cup butter
1 cup sliced dates
1 cup coarsely chopped nut meats
1 tea. vanilla
Combine sugars, milk, butter and dates in heavy saucepan. Cook, stirring
occasionally, to soft ball stage (236 deg.) when tested in cold water.
Remove from heat; stir in nuts and vanilla. Beat until creamy and firm.
Knead and shape into a roll. Wrap in cloth wrung out of cold water to
help shape roll. Remove cloth and wrap in waxed paper, chill. Cut into slices as needed. Makes about 1 1/2 pounds candy.
