Beef Shepherd's Pie (adaptation of old family recipe)
makes 4 medium servings or 2 large

1 pound each hamburger and diced steak, 450 grams
1 cup diced carrots, 250 ml.
1/2 cup each corn, peas and onions, 125 ml.
4 large potatoes
1/2 small can of beef broth or consommé
1/2 cup water, 125 ml.

Preheat oven to 325 degrees F. Brown hamburger and steak in a heavy skillet.

Peel potatoes, cut into medium sized pieces and put on to boil over low heat.
When meat is browned add the beef broth or consommé and simmer over low heat until a thin gravy is made.

Add a little cornstarch about a teaspoon mixed in water about 1 cup to thicken the sauce, stirring constantly so no lumps form. Add carrots. Mash potatoes with a small amount of cream or milk and butter. Layer the meat and vegetables in a small casserole (in the following order: meat, corn, meat, peas, meat and onions) and top with the mashed potatoes. Bake at 325 degrees until the potatoes are lightly browned.
