Onion Casserole

8 c. white onion slices (Especially good with Walla Walla sweet onions)
butter
1/2 lb. Swiss cheese, grated
1 (10 oz.) can cream of chicken soup
1 c. milk
1 large loaf French bread, sliced

Peel, slice and separate onions into rings. To measure, completely fill a 2-quart casserole (the onions will cook down.) Saute onion rings in butter in a skillet. As they brown, place onion rings back in casserole. Sprinkle grated cheese over top of browned onions.

Mix soup and milk together thoroughly; pour over cheese, lifting onions so mixture goes throughout.
Slightly butter French bread slices and place around casserole, pushing down into mixture with ends of bread sticking up out of mixture. Bake at 350 degrees until bread is toasted, about 30 minutes.
