Tomato Cheese Casserole

1/2 cup margarine
2 large sweet onions, sliced
1 pkg. (6 oz.) plain croutons
6 large tomatoes, sliced
1/2 tsp. crumbled basil or 2 Tbl. chopped fresh basil
salt and pepper
3 cups (12 oz.) shredded Havarti or Monterey Jack Cheese

Preheat oven to 350° F.
In a skillet, heat butter or margarine and saute onions for 5 minutes. Stir in croutons and saute for another 3 or 4 minutes.

In a greased 2 quart casserole layer crouton-onion mixture, tomatoes, sprinkle with basil and salt and pepper, then cheese. End with tomatoes and cheese.

Bake in preheated 350 degree oven for 35 to 40 minutes or until cheese is melted.
