Caramel Apple Bars

1/2 cup butter
1/4 cup shortening
1 cup packed brown sugar
1 3/4 cups flour
1 cup old fashioned or quick oats
1 teaspoon salt
1/2 teaspoon baking soda
1/2 cup chopped pecans, optional
Filling:
5 cups tart apples, peeled, cored, and coarsely chopped or sliced thin
3 tablespoons flour
14 ounces pkg. caramels
3 tablespoons butter
Preheat oven to 400.
In mixing bowl, cream butter, shortening and brown sugar until fluffy.
Add flour, oats, salt and baking soda; mix well.
Stir in pecans if using.
Set aside 2 cups of this mixture.
Press remaining oat mixture into bottom of an ungreased 13x9 pan.
For filling, toss apples with flour; spoon over crust.
In a saucepan, melt caramels and butter over low heat; drizzle over apples.
Top with reserved oat mixture.
Bake until lightly browned.
Serve warm or at room-temperature.
