Raisin Spice Bars

1 cup raisins
1 teas. baking soda
1 cup granulated sugar
3/4 cup butter
1/2 cup shortening
1 egg
1/2 teas. salt
1 3/4 cups flour
1 teas. cinnamon
1/2 teas. ground cloves
1/2 teas. nutmeg
1 teas. vanilla
confectioners (powdered) sugar

Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Grease a 9 x 13 inch baking dish.

In a saucepan combine raisins and 2 cups of water. Bring to a boil and cook for 10 minutes. Remove from heat and stir in soda. Cream granulated sugar, 1/2 cup of butter or shortening in mixing bowl. Beat in egg and salt. Combine flour and spices; stir alternately with raisin mixture into egg mixture. Turn batter into pan. Bake for 35 minutes.

Combine remaining butter, 2 tablespoons water, and vanilla with enough confectioners sugar to give good spreading consistency. Spread on cake while still warm. Cool and cut into bars. 3 x 1 inch makes about 32 bars.
