Rocky Mountain Brownies

1 box German Chocolate cake mix
1 1/2 sticks margarine or butter
2/3 cup evaporated milk, divided in half
1/2 teaspoon vanilla
1 pound caramels, regular or chocolate
1 cup chocolate chips
1 cup chopped nuts


Preheat oven to 375° F and grease a 9 x 13 pan.

Combine cake mix with margarine or butter, 1/3 cup evaporated milk and vanilla. Pour 2/3 of batter into prepared pan and bake about 6 minutes.

Reduce oven temp. to 350°.

Melt caramels and 1/3 cup evaporated milk in double boiler. Keep warm.

Sprinkle 1 cup chocolate chips and nuts over baked mixture, then pour caramel over this. Crumble remaining batter over top. Bake 16 minutes at 350 degrees. Cool at least 15 minutes before cutting.
