Quaker's Chewy Choc-Oat-Chip Cookies

1 c margarine or butter, softened
1 1/4 cup firmly packed brown sugar
1/2 cup granulated sugar
2 eggs
2 tbsp. milk
2 tsp. vanilla
1 3/4 cups flour
1 tsp. baking soda
1/2 tsp. salt, optional
2 1/2 cups Quaker Oats ( quick or old fashioned, uncooked)
2 cups (12 oz) semisweet chocolate chips
1 cup coarsely chopped nuts, optional
Preheat to 375.
Beat the butter and two sugars together until creamy. Add eggs, milk, and vanilla, then beat well.
Combine dry ingredients, then add to mixture and mix well. Stir in oats, chocolate chips and nuts, mix well.
Drop by rounded teaspoonfuls onto ungreased cookie sheet.
Bake for 9 to 10 minutes for a chewy cookie, 12 to 13 minutes for a crisp cookie. Cool 1 minute then remove to a wire rack. Cool completely and store in a tightly covered container.
Makes about 5 dozen.
Variations:
Bar cookies - Press dough onto bottom of a 13 x 9 baking pan. Bake 30 to 35 minutes until golden brown. Cool completely, cut into bars and store tightly covered.
Raisin Spice Oatmeal Cookies - Prepare cookies as directed, adding 1 tsp ground cinnamon and 1/4 tsp ground nutmeg to dry ingredients.
Substitute 1 cup raisins for chocolate chips.
Signature Oatmeal Cookies - Prepare cookies as recipes directs, replacing the 1 c chocolate chips with 1 c of any combination of these ingredients- raisins, diced dried mixed fruit, crushed toffee pieces or candy coated chocolate pieces.
