Country French Apple Crescent Casserole

Dumplings:
2 T. Sugar
1 t. cinnamon
1-8 oz. can crescent rolls
1 large apple, peeled and cut into 8 pieces

Sauce:
1/2 c. sugar
1/2 c. whipping cream
1 T. almond extract or amaretto
1 egg

Topping:
1/2 c. sliced almonds
cinnamon

Heat oven to 375.

In small bowl, combine 2 T. sugar and cinnamon. Separate dough into 8 triangles and sprinkle cinnamon-sugar over evenly. Press sugar into dough, flattening it slightly. Place apple slice on wide end of each triangle, tuck in edges around apple slice and roll up starting at wide end. Seal all seams and place tip down in ungreased 9" round baking pan or pie plate.

Place long side of 7 dumplings around the outside edge of the dish and one in the middle. Bake and 375 for 15-20 minutes until golden brown.

Whisk together sauce ingredients and spoon over partially baked rolls. Sprinkle with almonds and cinnamon. Bake 13-18 minutes more until deep golden brown, covering top with foil during last 5 minutes if needed to prevent excessive browning. Serve warm, store in refridgerator.
