Individual Baked Alaska

1 qt. ice cream
6 small sponge shortcakes
6 egg whites
1/2 tsp. cream of tartar
1 c. sugar


Preheat oven to 500 degrees.

Place ice cream in mounds on sponge shortcake. Place in freezer at least 1 hour.

Beat egg whites and cream of tartar until stiff, just before serving. Beat sugar in gradually, beating until meringue is stiff and glossy.

Place cake with ice cream on several thickness of wrapping paper on a board thoroughly soaked in water. Completely cover ice cream and sides of cake with thick coating of meringue. Bake in 500 degree oven just until delicately browned, 3 to 5 minutes. Serve at once.
