2 cups sugar
4 cups water
1 cup fresh lemon juice (about six medium lemons)
In a medium saucepan, combine sugar and two cups water. Bring to a boil, stirring to dissolve sugar. Simmer five minutes. Cool to room temperature; refrigerate syrup until chilled.
In a pitcher, mix remaining two cups water, the lemon juice and chilled syrup (stir in additional water if desired).
Serve in tall glasses over ice. Garnish with lemon slices, or a twist of the lemon peel, if desired. Serves six.
