Flavoured Green Gram and Rice 4 tbsp cooking oil 1 onion finely chopped 2 cloves garlic crushed 1 piece ginger 1 inch long 4 green chillies chopped 1 piece cinnamon stick 1 inch long 4 whole green cardamoms 1 tsp tumeric salt to taste 350 g /12 oz rice 175 g/6 oz split green gram (lentils) washed and soaked for 20 minutes 575ml/2 1/2 cups water Heat oil and fry onion,garlic,chillies,cinnamon,cardamoms,tumeric salt until onion is soft. Drain rice and gram, add to the spices and saute for 2-3 minutes.Reduce heat, cover and cook for 20-30 minutes or until the water is absorbed. Take the pan off the heat and leave to rest for 5 minutes. You can reduce the garlic and chilli to your own taste.
