New England Boiled Dinner

1 smoked shoulder, any size
1 turnip, peel and cut into quarters
1 cabbage, cut into wedges
3 onions, peel and leave whole
potatoes, desired amount, peeled and cut in half
Carrots, peeled and cut in half


Place ham in a large kettle. Cover with water about 2" from top of ham. Cover kettle and bring to a boil. Turn heat to meduim, making sure it keeps boiling. Cook a half hour per pound. Prepare veggies and add during the last half hour of cooking.
