Grandma's Vinegar Candy

This a recipe my mother used to make for my sister and I when we were
small. Years later Mom would make this for my son and daughter. She wrote
out the recipe in her beautiful handwriting on a 3 x 5 index card, which
is now yellowed with age. A simple candy for the little ones to eat; and
sticky fingers and mouths to clean after consuming
GRANDMA'S VINEGAR CANDY.
2 cups sugar
2 tablespoons of water put into a measuring cup and the cup filled to
1/2 cup mark with vinegar.
A piece of butter the size of an egg.
flavoring if desired--usually vanilla
Put sugar, weakened vinegar in jar and shake vigorously three or four
minutes. Pour carefully into saucepan being careful to keep off sides
of pan. Add butter and bring to a boil, let boil 20 minutes or until
it hardens in cold water. DO NOT STIR WHILE COOKING as it may go to sugar.
Add 1 tsp. vanilla and pour out onto well-buttered platter. When cool
crack into bite sized pieces.
In memory of Hazel Perry Timmons. (with a lump in my throat, and fingers
that can barely type, I wipe away the tears of many happy memories--C)
