Penne with Asparagus and Mushrooms

1/2 lb. penne pasta -- uncooked
pot of water
salt

Sauce:
1 1/2 tbsp. extra-virgin olive oil
1 cup button mushrooms -- sliced
1 clove garlic -- slivered
salt and freshly ground black pepper -- to taste
1/2 bunch trimmed asparagus -- cut in 1" diagonal slices
1/4 cup mozzarella cheese -- shredded
1/8 cup Parmesan cheese -- freshly grated
1 tbsp. fresh basil leaves -- chiffonade


Put up a big pot of water.

Heat the oil in a large nonstick skillet over a medium-high heat. When hot, add mushrooms and cook, stirring, until golden and tender, about 10 minutes. Add the garlic, salt and pepper. Cook for 2 minutes. Remove from heat.

Add penne to water and add salt. Boil, until al dente, about 8 minutes. Add the asparagus and cook until tender, 3 minutes. Drain.

Add the penne and asparagus to the skillet and stir to coat with mushroom mixture. Add the mozzarella and the Parmesan. Sprinkle with the basil. Serve at once with some hot breadsticks or Italian bread.
