Marie's Never-Fail Pie

10 tablespoons cornstarch
1 cup sugar
1 teaspoon salt
1 cup cold water
4 cups milk
4 egg yolks
1 cup milk
2 teaspoons vanilla
2 tablespoons butter
4 egg whites
1/8 teaspoon salt
1/4 cup sugar

Combine cornstarch, sugar, salt and cold water in saucepan and mix well. Add 4 cups milk and cook over medium heat until thick.

Beat 4 egg yolks until thick; add the 1 cup milk and add to above mixture. Bring to a boil; add vanilla and butter and mix well.

Beat egg whites until stiff and add hot pudding to this.

Coconut - sprinkle in crust
Banana - line crust with sliced bananas
Butterscotch - substitute brown sugar
