Bread and Butter Pickles
3 qts. small cucumbers
1 c. medium onions, sliced
1 qt. vinegar
1 c. granulated sugar
1 Tbsp. mustard seed
1 1/2 tsp. celery seed
1 tsp. tumeric
1/2 tsp. ground cloves
1/4 tsp. alum
Slice cucumbers and onions; soak overnight in a brine solution the ratio of 1 c. salt to 1 gallon water.
Mix vinegar and spices; bring to a boil in large pot. Drain cucumbers and onions. Put into boiling liquid. Boil until almost tender (5 to 10 minutes). Pack in sterile bottles and seal.
